The Jardine Matheson Group (Jardines) began as a trading business in the Chinese port city of Canton — now Guangzhou. The company, which was founded by Scots William Jardine and James Matheson in 1832, later became one of the first foreign-owned trading houses, or “Hongs,” in the former British colony of Hong Kong.
